2looks and feels good initially but falls apart and reveals cheap Chinese construction
By J. C. Hirsch
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R366D38Y03YU01 This shoe is rated highly on the ECCO website and the ECCO store in Palm Beach Gardens recommended it highly so my husband spent $400 for what we thought would be a long lasting pair of leather golf shoes, only requiring replacement of the cleats, similar to the FootJoy's or Florsheim's he'd had in the past. What a surprise we received yesterday after we had hit a few buckets of balls. The shoes are about 2-3 years old but my husband only played about 20 times in them. The last time we had played was about a year ago. So he didn't notice anything when he put them on but when he took them off we were flabbergasted at the way they were falling apart. The first thing we noticed was the heel, which "looks" like it has layers of leather, is actually just a veneer covering up an artificial material. The veneer was coming off on both shoes. Then we saw that the leather sole was also separating from the rest of the shoe. The "stitches" in the sole are actually fake. They only go thru the sole itself, not attaching the sole to anything. The "glue" that was holding the sole to the shoe had apparently deteriorated and was separating. We also noticed some kind of artificial filler strip running along the edge of the sole that had deteriorated and was breaking apart. This wasn't all. We were flabbergasted at these shoes as we had thought they were so highly rated, Pros use them, etc. I noticed the leather sole didn't even run the full length of the shoe, it stopped at the front of the heel and was lifting off the rest of the shoe. I took a bunch of pictures of the shoes and today we brought them into the ECCO store to see what they would do. We expected a replacement or credit due to multiple defective materials that was clear in both shoes. These were $400 shoes! The shoe salesman said he couldn't do a thing except to give me a mail back bag to "request" warranty consideration. So we put them in the bag and mailed them today. I will come back to this review and update the results of the mailback. Meanwhile, the pictures can be seen at the following Picasa short URL: [...]Update: 6/27/2012 URL above not shown so uploaded video of those pictures. Shoes were sent out June 5th. Received e-mail they were received June 19th. No word since then. Will update later.July 27, 2012 Update: I received word thru the ECCO Facebook page that an e-mail was sent to me by customer service that they were going to replace the shoes and if I hadn't received the e-mail to call customer service. I called customer service and told them such and they found my return and told me they would offer $225 back toward another pair of shoes. This amounted to 1/2 what I had paid and contradicted with what the Facebook response had told me. I told this to the representative and she asked me to hold and later came back to tell me that they would replace the shoes. She said it would be awhile as they were not in stock. I told her I could order it online at that time but she said they get different stock. I waited updating this post until I received the shoes which I did receive earlier this week which is 1 1/2 months after sending back the shoes. The new shoes appear identical to my previous shoes except the new ones have gold colored rings around the lace holes and there is small a gold colored emblem in the center around the first lace as it crosses the lower rings. I have conflicting reports from ECCO as to whether the construction is the same, one source telling me by e-mail that the construction hasn't changed in years and the customer rep telling me this model is different than the one I originally had which had the word "saddle" in the description which I cannot confirm. Because they replaced the shoes (after some discussion), I'm upping my rating to 2 stars as there is possibility that the construction may be better than what I had. Only time will tell. My review on the ECCO USA website was still never posted which continues to make the credibility of their user comments questionable.
